We Are Serious About Ending Homelessness in Waterloo Region

Locally we celebrated National Housing Day on November 16. A week later, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the historic National Housing Strategy.  With this announcement, the Federal Government has definitively declared that it is committed to working toward ending homelessness and creating affordable housing.

The Ontario Government, through its Poverty Reduction Strategy prioritized ending homelessness. They are already well into developing and implementing their plan to end persistent homelessness by 2025.  Further, the Province is working on ways to reduce homelessness as a result of discharge from Provincial Institutions and Services including from foster care, jails and hospitals. They are also funding new initiatives and research aimed at generating models that can be replicated across the Province.

The announcements from the Feds and Province are welcome news for our Regional Council . They have been committed to these issues for several decades.  Additionally, all three city councils have created municipal incentives to support new affordable housing projects and have recognized their role in working to end homelessness.

Finally, we have support, leadership and funding from all orders of government. It is clear – we are serious about ending homelessness in Waterloo Region!
